RED is definitely the colour for Street Fit
by Jonathan Williams
Local Keep Fit instructor Rachel Dyer who is more commonly known as RED Fitness is hoping to get the locals Street Fit.
Street Fit is the latest dance fitness craze to hit the UK and RED will be one of the first in Carmarthenshire, if not the first, to teach it.
It is best describe as ‘a funky combo of street dance moves and cardio work that forms a fun all over body workout for all ages which is put together with motivational hip hop and street tunes.
RED says she is getting ready to funk up Llanelli!
When did you start dancing?
I have danced since I was 3 yrs old, always had a passion for music and movement, I did various certificates and training and later my dance A Level but then I focussed on family for a bit.
Why did you start RED Fitness?
I graduated in social justice and religion last year and simultaneously in group fitness. I then realised the social relevance of exercise and music and how it motivates, challenges, and also brings people together.
I was particularly concerned for those who for whatever reason could not or didn’t want to go to a commercial gym, so I chose to do community classes for all ages, in areas that needed motivation!
You’ve got people in areas with fewer resources that have less motivation, less self esteem, and less money to pay for recreational activities.
They would be more likely to smoke, drink and spend money on the necessities.
I’d like to make a difference in the communities by providing workouts which avoid the pressures of a gym environment and give people a positive social experience.
Can you tell us more about Street Fit?
Street fit will be a fresh new form of exercise accessible to everyone and satisfies both an urge to dance, the need for total fitness, and a love of music.
More importantly, it is not restricted to the youngsters!
So if like me you think you are too old to get funky, then this is for you!
Do you provide other types of fitness?
If you need more of a challenge, I also run combat style classes on the outskirts of Llanelli.
On dry Wednesday mornings, I get together with some of the Llanelli Netmums and other parents for an alfresco workout in Sandy Water park.
I’ve also worked alongside Communities First Llwynhendy on various projects and I’ve started working with them on an after school club with the Scarlets.
She currently runs classes in Carmarthenshire and will be starting Street Fit on April 27th. Kids class (ages 7-13) in Trallwm Hall 5-6 pm, cost is £3.
Adults (14 and over) in Sandy hall from 6.45pm. Cost is £2.50 for the first class, normally £3.50.
