In response to the recent decision to abolish the fuel allowance, CAFgas CIC, a nonprofit social enterprise specializing in plumbing and heating, has launched a critical fundraiser aimed at providing free boiler repairs for elderly individuals who cannot afford them. This initiative is set to span across Wales and parts of England, including Cheshire West and the Wirral and Liverpool.
The abolition of the fuel allowance is a decision that many fear will have devastating effects on the elderly, leading to severe mental health challenges and, tragically, even preventable deaths due to a lack of heating during the colder months.
“This decision is a betrayal of our elders, who are already vulnerable. We cannot stand by and do nothing,” said James Hunt, founder of CAFgas CIC. “Our goal is to raise £100,000 to help a elderly person that has to suffer in the cold this winter because they can’t afford to repair their boiler.”
Fundraising Event: “Wax for Warmth”
To raise awareness and funds, James Hunt will undergo a three-day, full-body waxing event across different locations in Wales and England. This extreme act symbolizes the urgent and extreme need for support. If the £100,000 target is reached, Hunt has pledged to also wax his eyebrows and shave his head completely bald. Who knows if we raised enough we might be able to further the reach around England!
How the Fundraiser Works:
- Partnership with Warm Wales: The organization will help identify eligible elderly individuals, ensuring that those in need receive the necessary repairs and support.
- Transparency and Accountability: All funds raised will be managed by an independent accountant, who will release funds only for verified repairs. A detailed report will be published, showing how and where every donation was spent.
- Community Involvement: Local gas engineers are encouraged to join the initiative, and the public is invited to participate in fundraising efforts.
How You Can Help:
- Donate: We need 100 people to raise £1,000 each to reach our goal of £100,000.
- Participate: We are seeking volunteers and locations for the waxing event, as well as gas engineers willing to offer their services.
- Spread the Word: Share our story and help us reach as many people as possible.
“This fundraiser is about more than just fixing boilers—it’s about saving lives. With the support of our community, I believe we can make a real difference,” Hunt added.
