Lots of wet weather is forecast to be on its way and with it our experts are pushing for awareness of a potentially dangerous safety concern.
There are little-known risks of dogs drinking from puddles that need flagging to dog owners.
Just let me know if you would like anymore information or quotes regarding the information below and I will be happy to help.
Pooch & Mutt’s Resident Vet Dr. Linda Simon offers some advice on the matter to dog owners:
‘One of the biggest risks with puddle drinking is the possibility of a dog catching Leptospirosis. This is a serious infection passed on by vermin. It can also be passed to humans and can make both people and dogs very unwell. Thankfully, those dogs who’ve been vaccinated should have protection.
Dogs can catch a wide range of other diseases and it wouldn’t be uncommon for dogs to develop a stomach upset after puddle drinking.
When out and about, use a collapsible bowl and bring a bottle of water. If your dog is insistent they want to puddle drink, keep them on a lead to stop them.’
