YSGOL CARREG HIRFAEN ENJOYS OFFICIAL OPENING

Children at Ysgol Carreg Hirfaen have celebrated the official opening of their new school.

A ceremony took place to mark the occasion at the £5.7million building in Cwmann.

The event included entertainment from the children, a blessing of the key, speeches by dignitaries and the unveiling of a plaque by local county councillor and education scrutiny chair Cllr Eirwyn Williams.

Images of the building work, completed project and also drone footage showing an aerial view of the site, were played for guests.

Carmarthenshire County Council Leader Cllr Emlyn Dole, who gave an address at the ceremony, said: “I strongly believe it is important that the county council provides our children with the very best opportunities and facilities.

“This building is an important development for the whole community. What you have here are local children building on their hopes for the future.”

The school caters for children aged between four and 11, and also houses a Cylch Meithrin Carreg Hirfaen.

It has state of the art facilities and first class accommodation, including a 3G pitch, designed for both school and community use.

Ysgol Carreg Hirfaen was delivered through the council’s Modernising Education Programme.

The school is sited adjacent to the Canolfan Pentref Cwmann, at the heart of the community, both geographically and culturally

The scheme addresses key educational objectives, as well as providing a community resource.

Funding was shared between the council and the Welsh Government, through its 21st Century Schools initiative.

Headteacher Aled Jones Evans said: “It’s a different world for us, the children, parents and staff are over the moon with their new school. We are very grateful to everyone involved in making this happen.”
