Planning your autumn door

Homeowners are being given tips on how to create the perfect autumn door ahead of spooky season.

The experts at GardeningExpress.co.uk have put together their advice on the best plants and foliage to give the home an autumnal feel.

Celebrities including Stacey Solomon have already got their doors ready with a mix of planting and ghostly props to tie in with the season.

And while you may not have a celebrity budget, there are simple steps you can take to give the front of the home a seasonal feel.

Creating an autumnal wreath will add instant interest and can be made with foliage, leaves and berries from the garden.

Autumn planters, with the right planting and care, can last for months bringing seasonal cheer and a pop of colour.

Chris Bonnett from GardeningExpress.co.uk said: “Decorating your front door for autumn is the perfect way to celebrate the season. It’s the first thing people see, and with a few simple touches, you can really make a statement.

“An autumn wreath can capture the spirit of the season, with autumnal foliage and berries.  Incorporating planters will add colour and interest – and if they’re looked after, will last well into the winter.

“Don’t forget the pumpkins – the perfect finished touch ahead of Halloween.”

Here are GardeningExpress.co.uk’s tips for creating your autumn door:

Wreaths

A wreath should be central to your design. You can use artificial options or create a real wreath with foliage and berries in your garden. Try using fallen leaves from the garden or bundles of evergreen foliage for your base and add any colour from your garden. You can also use wheat and corn for an earthy, rustic feel.

Pumpkins

Pumpkins are a staple of any autumn door. Try lots of different styles – freshly picked varieties are a must alongside more quirky faux designs you can use year after year.

Garlands

You have the option of faux or real garland for your design, or create a combination of the two with a faux foliage base, adding berries and colour from the garden. For something simple, try creating a leaf garland simply by using craft glue to stick leaves to a string or garden twine.

Autumn planters

Create autumn planters to sit amongst your design using the best seasonal plants. They’ll add a touch of colour to lift the chilly months. Good choices include winter cyclamens, pansies, violas and polyanthus. Just remember to deadhead and they will keep looking good throughout the colder months.

Lights

With the nights drawing in, adding lights and lanterns will give your door an eerie feel after dark. Think about the colours you have in your door design and look for complementary lights and lanterns.

Accessories

Other elements you can bring in to add seasonal magic to your door include adding wooden crates full of seasonal treasures and if you have enough space, adding a hay bale for seating.
