Blockbuster Getaways: The Real Cost Of Nostalgic Holidays in 2024

2024 has been a year of movie nostalgia, with nearly 88,000 articles written on the topic in the past year. From the news of Bridget Jones 4 to a new Rivals adaptation for Disney Plus, pop culture is full of throwbacks, and nostalgic entertainment is flooding the media.

This wave of nostalgia has brought back memories of the films we grew up with, including the iconic holidays our favourite characters took. The holiday experts at My Budget Break have taken a deeper dive into these iconic trips, calculating how much those holidays would cost in 2024 compared to their release dates.

Murder on the purse strings as the Orient Express is 5375% more expensive than in 1934

A truly nostalgic and timeless classic, Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel Murder on the Orient Express is celebrating its 50th anniversary of the 1974 film adaptation this year. Since that first film version, the story has seen a cinematic reboot in 2017 directed by Kenneth Branagh placing it firmly in the nostalgic favourites category.

In 2024, holidaymakers can embark on a very similar route on the Orient Express (minus the grisly details), by booking the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express offering, but there’s been a 5375% price increase to what it would have cost back in 1934. For a twin cabin on the 5-night trip, it costs a minimum of £17,500 per person. By reversing inflation, My Budget Break can reveal that back in 1934, this would have been £291.91.

Ross’s second wedding in Friends would cost each person 88% more in the present-day

Celebrating its 30th anniversary this month (September 2024), Friends is one of the most nostalgic TV shows of its time. One of the most iconic trips during the sitcom is the cast (bar Phoebe) heading to London for Ross’s wedding to Emily, where fans were left on a cliffhanger as he accidentally says Rachel’s name at the altar instead.

For the wedding, the characters stayed two nights at The London Marriott Hotel Grosvenor Square. Along with return flights from JFK to LHR, the trip would have cost £674.54 per person back in 1999. However, in 2024, the cost has increased by 88% to £1,268.50 per person.

Kevin & Perry Go Large, just like Ibiza’s 84% increase in price tag

Paul Scott, founder of My Budget Break, explains: “Ibiza is known for its sky-high prices, and it’s now more expensive than ever. Flights, accommodation, the steep cost of club tickets and refreshments have all risen significantly.” In the 2000s classic, Kevin and Perry head to Ibiza to chase their DJ dreams (amongst many other desires), but how much would their trip cost today?

The pair stay in Santa Eulalia, and My Budget Break estimates that a 1-week holiday in 2024 is 84% more expensive than in 2000. While flights and accommodation would cost around £317 back then, today it’s closer to £600—excluding the high price of club tickets. For example, a “Water Pack (5 bottles)” at Ibiza’s Amnesia costs 40 euros, compared to just £1.20 for the average single bottle in the UK.
