Brits have been offered advice on the best plants they can have in their bedrooms to improve sleep quality – as well as the plants that should be avoided.

Research shows that indoor plants can improve air quality by absorbing pollutants while providing oxygen, which in theory results in better sleep.

Certain plants even have calming properties that reduce stress and anxiety, whilst others increase humidity levels, which can reduce the risk of dry skin. Many species also filter out toxins, purifying the air.

But some species are better suited to the bedroom environment than others, so households have been told to consider Aloe Vera, Snake Plants and even Lavender over plants like Eucalyptus, Cacti and Orchids.

The best bedroom plants:

  1. Aloe Vera

Aloe Vera works by releasing oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide during the night ā€“ which means the air is being cleaned while you sleep! It has also been referred to as the medicinal plant, so definitely not one to miss in the household.

  1. Snake Plant

Another common household plant, the snake plant is also known to produce oxygen at night and remove carbon dioxide during the day. Additionally the ‘Mother-in-laws tongue’ filters toxins from the air and improves the immune system.

  1. Lavender

Lavender holds many positive features which makes it a popular plant for the bedroom. Its strong and recognisable scent is known to reduce anxiety levels – therefore promoting sleep. Additionally, it is known to deter pesky bugs such as moths or mosquitos.

  1. Peace Lily

Peace lilies are great for filtering out toxins from the air. These plants are also very low maintenance, as they need minimum care and thrive in low light environments, meaning they’re a great fit for those without green thumbs.

  1. Eucalyptus

Although the eucalyptus plant is well known for its scent, a lot of people tend to find the smell too strong and overwhelming, which could lead to possible headaches or respiratory irritation.

  1. Cacti

Unsurprisingly, it is suggested to keep cacti out of the bedroom due to the often dimly lit space which may lead to accidental harm caused from bumping into or knocking over the notoriously spikey plant.

  1. Orchids

Typically orchids are harmless, however a small percentage of people are actually allergic to them, which can cause possible respiratory issues or skin-related reactions. They can also be a challenge to maintain, which isn’t ideal for what should be the most relaxing and serene room of your home

  1. Sago palm

If you have pets in your home then this is one plant you should definitely avoid. Sago palms contain cycasin which can cause vomiting, liver damage or failure, hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, and in extreme cases death if ingested by pets.
