Anglesey’s Poppy scoops Exceptional Young Carer Child of Wales award

An Anglesey young carer supported by Action for Children, has won the Exceptional Young Carer award for 2024 at a Child of Wales ceremony in Swansea.  The award was presented to her by the BBC’s Gethin Jones and sponsor Huw Owen from Owens Transport Group.

Poppy Roberts, (14), is a devoted young carer for her twin brothers who have Autism. She has been registered as a young carer since she was five and has taken on the role of their protector and nurturer, helping her brothers with daily tasks, cooking meals, and being their voice when they struggle to communicate. She ensures their safety and well-being both at home and in the community, often stepping in like a big sister despite being younger.

Poppy said: ‘I’m really proud to have won this award.  I love supporting my family and always think it is what I should be doing.  I hope by winning this award I can raise more awareness of the role young carers have in their families.  It can be hard and I’m grateful for the support I get from Action for Children.  There are many young people out there who don’t realise they are young carers so I’m doing everything I can to make sure they receive the help they need and deserve.’

Laura Williams, Action for Children’s wellbeing practitioner at Ynys Mon Young Carers, said: ‘We are really proud of Poppy, she truly is exceptional.  Her dedication to her brothers never wavers and she thrives on helping her family, taking on responsibilities far beyond her years. She is always cheerful and a joy to work with, nothing is too much trouble when it comes to supporting her mum and brothers.

‘She is also a committed fundraiser and has raised over £2000 this year for Action for Children’s young carer services in North Wales.  We’re thrilled she’s been recognised in this way, it’s thoroughly deserved.  Congratulations Poppy!
