Tikka skipper relishing Welsh coast leg of epic round-UK voyage for Action for Children
Chief Petty Officer, Steve Pointon and his yacht, Tikka, are approaching the Welsh coast leg of his round-UK Tikka’s Travels sailing challenge to raise money for Action for Children.
They left Gosport on a high in early June after they learned they had sailed past their target of £10,000, determined to raise even more money and awareness for the leading UK charity over the next 12 weeks. The total has now reached £16,000 with a month to go.
Steve (50) from Cheddar said: “It’s been an arduous but exhilarating journey so far and I’m really excited about sailing around the Welsh coast. It’s a beautiful part of Britain and the Irish Sea can be very challenging so it’s a fantastic prospect for us as we enter the last month of the journey. I’m looking forward to raising money and awareness of Action for Children’s work at our various ports of call as people have been so interested and supportive right across the UK.”
“We’re driven by helping children and young people who have had difficult starts in life – like our adopted son, Harry. We’ve been away a long time but we’re so determined to keep going as we have smashed our target of £10,000 and would love to reach £20,000. I hope the Welsh come and say hello, find out more about what we’re doing and help those children who need it most in our communities.”
The Welsh leg will include the following stops, subject to weather and tide times:
25th July Conwy
26th July Caernarfon
27th July Barmouth
28th July Aberystwyth
29th July Fishguard
1st Aug Milford Haven
2nd Aug Tenby
3rd Aug Swansea
4th Aug Cardiff
Tikka’s Travels has inspired a range of other challenges to coincide with Tikka’s journey around the UK. A 24-hour Edinburgh to Stoke bike ride by Steve’s brother, Anthony and friends for Tikka’s Cycling Challenge raised nearly £3,000 in May, and extreme cyclist and friend, Martin Torbett also from Cheddar, has been riding around the UK during the voyage and meeting Steve at various ports of call. Martin’s partner, Naomi, will be donning an Action for Children top and running 10K every day over the three months that they are away.
There is also a ‘Tikka’s Walking & Climbing Challenge’ involving members of RNAS Yeovilton, Louise Wrightson and Billi Staite walking and climbing in Scotland on the Cape Wrath Trail, a distance equivalent to climbing Mount Everest.
