An annual report by the manufacturers organisation – EEF – reports that Wales has almost 5,600 manufacturing firms; up 6.8% on 2015.
Not only has the number of Welsh manufacturing firms grown significantly over the preceding 12 months, the report finds that Wales has the strongest output growth in the UK.
According to the report, some 165,000 people are now employed by manufacturers across the UK.
Shadow Cabinet Secretary for the Economy, Russell George, said:
“Earlier this week we learnt that unemployment in Wales has fallen to its lowest level for more than a decade.
“It’s a sign of a buoyant economy where businesses are confident enough to take on new staff.
“The Welsh Government needs to work proactively with the UK Government to continue to build on the solid economic foundations which have been laid.
“If we can maintain a stable base for the economy, and for manufacturing, with successful Brexit negotiations Wales should be well placed to reap the rewards of future growth in this sector.”
