Valley Cougars had no problems overcoming Coventry Bears Reserves at Treharris, despite the midlands side fielding a number of first team players.
The Cougars ran in eight tries to go top of the league, with three of them coming in the first nine minutes.
The first try came in the first minute after a Yousif Suliman try in the corner with Mike Hurley converting.
Second came after five minutes. Rhys Davies scoring near to the sticks, before, from kick-off, Suliman set up Lewis Phillips for the third. Hurley converted both and it was 18-0.
Coventry did hit back through a Danny Brown try that went unconverted but it was just respite.
Ross Price went over from short range for the fourth Cougars try which Hurley improved to make it 24-4 at half-time.
Cougars attacked and defended well and it took almost 20 minutes for the first try of the second half, Adam Watton scoring with Hurley unable to land the kick for the only time in the game.
Skipper Scott Giles quickly followed that up with a try in the corner which Hurley did well to convert.
Price ran over for his second and Cougars’ seventh before a second from Suliman, after he intercepted and ran 30 metres, completed the home side’s tries. Both were converted by Hurley.
Coventry had the last say with an unconverted Chris Brown effort but the day belonged to the Cougars, doing their Welsh friends Torfaen Tigers a favour on the way.
