More than £8,000 was raised for charity at the Lord Mayor’s Honours event on Friday night.
A combination of fundraising activities on the evening amassed £8,205 for the Lord Mayor’s charities – Maggie’s Cancer Centre, the Paul Popham Fund and the Prince’s Gate.
Fundraising activities included an auction with prizes such as a signed Ospreys shirt, a Liberty Stadium hospitality box for the Swans’ Premier League game against Chelsea, and a bottle of limited edition Penderyn Whisky signed by Sir Gareth Edwards.
Cllr David Hopkins, Lord Mayor of Swansea, honoured stars of sport, stage, screen and local communities at the event in the Brangwyn Hall.
Catherine Zeta-Jones was honoured for services to Swansea internationally, Bonnie Tyler was honoured for services to music, and Edwina Hart was honoured for services to political life.
Other winners included Alan Curtis for services to sport, Hafod Primary School headteacher Rachael Webb for services to the community, and Ed Thomas for services to film.
The Lord Mayor’s Choice Honour went to Ann Stevens, a 78-year-old community stalwart from Mayhill.
The evening was funded by sponsorship money and ticket sales.
Cllr Hopkins said: “It was a terrific evening where we honoured both well-known people and stars from our local communities whose work has greatly contributed to the life and reputation of our wonderful city.
“The honour winners were hugely deserving of recognition for all they’ve done to enrich Swansea’s communities, benefit other people and raise the city’s profile across the world.
“The evening also gave a fantastic opportunity to raise money for the charities I’ve chosen to support during my year as Lord Mayor, so I’m delighted with the amount of money that was raised because it will go to some very worthy causes.”
Other honour recipients on the evening included Joe’s Ice Cream for services to leisure and tourism, Kev Johns for services to charity, and Huw Edwards for services to journalism.
Four Swansea poppy sellers with a combined age of over 330 were honoured for services to military and defence.
