A new cycle route map is being used to encourage commuters in Swansea to ditch the car in favour of a bike journey to work, school or the shops.
Swansea has lots of high quality cycle routes which are suitable for anyone from complete beginners to more advanced cyclists. The maps, suitable for all types of bikes, focus on routes which take the most direct and flattest journeys.
Developed in partnership between Swansea Council and Neath Port Talbot Council, the maps show the excellent network of cycle routes which are available across Swansea Bay and its valleys. The maps are available in two editions – one covering the Swansea urban area, and the other for Neath and Port Talbot.
Cllr David Hopkins, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Transportation, said: “This is a great new initiative aimed at encouraging more people to use the fantastic cycle network in our area. Replacing some of your car journeys with cycling can help you save money, get fitter and do your bit towards reducing the city’s carbon footprint.
“Lots of improvements have been made to our existing cycle network, which is part of our commitment to making cycling a viable and safe mode of transport for those who choose to get on a bike instead of the car, either for fun or for commuting to work.”
Cllr Mark Child, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Healthy City and Wellbeing, said: “Cycling is a great way to commute or to discover the beauty of Swansea Bay. We’re fortunate to live on a stunning coastline where so many beaches, green spaces and world class views at close at hand, so I’d encourage as many people as possible to get on their bikes. These maps make it easier than ever to plan cycle trips, whether you’re cycling alone or planning trips on two wheels with friends or family.”
Swansea Council has invested thousands of pounds upgrading sections of cycle path throughout the city in recent years, with an additional 4km of shared use paths being delivered in the past year alone. These new routes are included in the new cycle map.
