AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 19TH CENTURY local businessmen commissioned cannons to be positioned on Machynys point because they feared a French invasion. The cannons were never used to thwart an invasion but they were used to celebrate Queen Victoria’s accession to the throne.
During the celebrations Will Kelly investigated why one of the cannons misfired. Unfortunately for Will, the Cannoneer, there was an explosion and he was killed. Local tradition relates that whenever there is a thunderstorm in Llanelli and the lightning cracks across the skies, the ghost of Will Kelly, dressed in seaman’s tails, haunts Box Cemetery.
