Pembrokeshire County Council has responded to claims by Unison that hundreds of jobs are at risk as a result of the Authority consulting on future options in the delivery of its leisure, culture and tourism services.
The Council’s Deputy Leader, Keith Lewis, said: “I am disappointed that Unison has responded so prematurely in this negative manner.
“The consultation process has only just started and there is some way to go before any final decisions are taken.
“However what is clear is that such are the financial pressures being faced by the Authority in the next few years and in order to maintain a quality service to our customers and safeguard the future of staff, then we do need to examine different ways of delivering these services.
“This is not about ‘giving away services’ as UNISON claims, rather – instead of further reductions and possible closures of leisure centres and libraries as part of the Council’s continued budget reductions – a different model of delivery is more likely to safeguard and possibly expand service provision in the future.”
