The Confederation of British Industry in Wales is warning that traffic congestion across the country could be starving the economy of jobs.

Meanwhile, the Campaign for Better Transport has complained about a focus on infrastructure projects linking England with Wales, often at the expense of developing transport inside Wales.

Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Economy and Transport, Russell George AM, said that the impact was most keenly felt in rural parts of the country.

He said:

“Cross-border links are vital to the Welsh economy, but we mustn’t lose sight of the need to develop transport links within Wales.

“This country relies heavily on small and medium sized firms – many in the tourism industry – who are losing money every year due to poor transport connectivity, especially in rural parts of Wales.

“In the long term we must look to improve links between the north and south, and to the West, but we also need to develop a public transport network which is fit for purpose.”
