A new school has been officially established for pupils in the Seaside area of Llanelli.

Ysgol Pen Rhos replaces the former Copperworks infants and nursery, and Lakefield primary schools.

Work is progressing on the new school building, which will be sited on the former Draka site in Copperworks Road.

Pupils will remain in the Copperworks and Lakefield buildings until the new school has been completed, which is expected to be by the summer term in 2018.

Ysgol Pen Rhos will be a new three-11 dual strea, Welsh and English, community primary and will cater for 420 pupils plus 60 nursery places.

A new headteacher, Joe Cudd, formerly of Ysgol Maes y Morfa, has been appointed and has taken up his post for the start of term.

The new school building is being delivered through Carmarthenshire County Council’s Modernising Education Programme, with funding through the Welsh Government’s 21stCentury Schools initiative.

Education executive board member Cllr Gareth Jones said: “It is good to see the two schools formally coming together, and establishing the new Ysgol Pen Rhos.

“Progress also continues on the new building which will provide the modern facilities and the right kind of learning environment the children need.

“It will also help meet the increasing demand for bilingual primary education in this area.”
