Leanne Wood unveils five year Assembly plan for opposition

Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood has today unveil her party’s plan for the next Assembly term as she launched the party’s Programme for Opposition.

Plaid Cymru’s Programme for Opposition is a comprehensive programme which the party will seek to implement during the Assembly term.

It is the first time the Party of Wales has produced a programme of this kind. It will offer a comprehensive alternative to the government’s programme, when it is published.

Leanne Wood said that the document will set the agenda for delivery during this Assembly term, and will be updated when necessary.

Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood said:

“Since the election, Plaid Cymru has held the role of official opposition to the government in the Assembly. In that role, we will work to deliver the best deal for people in Wales and make sure at all times, the Welsh national interest is promoted.

“Through our opposition we will hold the Welsh Government to account with robust scrutiny. At the same time, as the government had no majority, our opposition also means securing real gains and achievements for our constituents and for the nation.

“That’s why Plaid Cymru is today publishing our Programme for Opposition. For the first time, the Labour-led government will be held to account and forced to act for the whole of Wales by a party with a detailed and comprehensive alternative Programme.

“This Programme is based on our comprehensive 2016 election manifesto and will guide our work over the next Assembly term.

“The Party of Wales has already secured some policies which will improve many people’s lives in our ‘Compact to Move Wales Forward’, such as a review of the Independent Patient Funding Request system, which will help sufferers of cancer and other illness have more equal access to rate drugs and treatments, more childcare as well as for the establishment of a National Infrastructure Commission.

“Plaid Cymru will use every opportunity available to us to ensure that the government always works in the best interests of people in Wales.”
