Jack Daniels invented in Llanelli!

THE Americans may find this hard to swallow — but there’s a good chance Jack Daniel’s whiskey actually comes from Llanelli.

A hazy legend holds that the tipple — a US icon and the world’s best-seller — was created in Lynchburg, Tennessee, by Jack Daniel in 1866.

But Welshman Mark Evans claims that his great-great-grandmother invented it here in Llanelli.

The 47-year-old found a recipe, in Welsh, in a book of herbal remedies that was written by Marged Daniel’s in 1853 — 13 years before Jack Daniel’s launched.

Mark believes it was taken to America by another relative. He said: “There’s a strong link because my grandmother’s grandfather’s brother went to the US and after a few letters no one heard from him. That’d be around the time Jack Daniel’s was set up.

“He was known as John ‘Jack the Lad’ Daniel’s. We know he went to Lynchburg.”

The distillery opened three years after John left Wales — and its website says the founder was from Wales.

However, records of its origins were lost in a fire.
