Health Secretary Vaughan Gething has called on everyone in Wales to think about keeping well this winter and if they need a health professional to use Choose Well to ensure they access the right NHS service for them.

By Choosing Well, busy NHS services – including A&E units that see an increase in the numbers of people attending in winter – will be able to help the people who need them most.

Vaughan Gething today attended a winter planning meeting where key NHS and Local Authority staff discussed and scrutinised their integrated plans and shared learning in preparation for the forthcoming winter period. He said:

“In recent years, we have seen increasing numbers of people using A&E and making emergency ambulance calls in winter time, as well as an increase in GP out of hours consultations.

“Health boards, the Welsh Ambulance Service and local authorities have worked together to develop integrated winter plans, designed to help with their response to the often challenging winter pressures.

“However, we can all play a part.  If you are eligible for a free flu vaccine, it’s worth making plans to get it soon so you are protected throughout the autumn and winter this year.

“If you do get sick and need medical attention, take a look at the Choose Well website and app that explain what each NHS service does.  In many cases people go to emergency units when they could receive advice, be seen and assessed in a minor injuries unit, GP surgery or a pharmacy”.
