The recent Welsh Government programme for the next five years, âTaking Wales Forwardâ has been cautiously welcomed by ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Cymru Wales
The programme, launched earlier this week, emphasized that the Welsh Governmentâs focus will be on driving improvement in the Welsh economy and public services, delivering a Wales which is prosperous and secure, healthy and active, ambitious and learning, united and connected. The First Minister also confirmed that the Welsh Governmentâs key pledges have been maintained despite the uncertainty caused by the Brexit vote, including the commitment to create at least 100,000 all-age apprenticeships and the development of the South Wales Metro.
Lloyd Powell, head of ACCA Cymru Wales, stated:
âWe welcome the commitments outlined in âTaking Wales Forwardâ, but at this stage they are precisely that â commitments. I particularly welcome the plans around tax and rate cuts to support businesses, the further development of apprenticeships and commitments to improve the transport system and broadband network.Â
The real test will be in delivering on these commitments, to ensure that Wales is a competitive and attractive place to do business, supported by a skilled and healthy workforce and high quality infrastructure.â
Lloyd Powell also particularly welcomes support for the economy in light of the proposed Land Transaction Tax,
âWhile debate continues over the merits of further devolved taxation powers, the most important factor is that business flourishes in Wales – offering not only improved revenues but jobs and opportunities for local communities and young people. Trying to maintain and build on Cardiffâs position as one of the UKâs key financial centres is one of the key priorities for the Government for the next five years and beyond.â
