Commenting on today’s publication of the Children’s Commissioner’s annual report in Wales, Head of NSPCC Cymru / Wales Des Mannion, said:

“Along with the Children’s Commissioner we welcome the Welsh Government’s creation of a cabinet secretary for children and its focus on early intervention, but more needs to be done – particularly in the area of children’s mental health.

“Last year 340 children called Childline from Wales with worries about mental health and we are concerned that children in urgent need of key therapeutic services are not receiving them quickly enough.

“This forms the focus of our campaign, It’s Time, and we continue to urge the Welsh Government to maintain additional funding and prioritise treatment for children who have been abused or neglected.

“The Commissioner’s report highlights other concerns shared by NSPCC Cymru / Wales.

“On home learning, parents have every right to teach their children at home and this alone is no risk factor for abuse or neglect. But it’s absolutely vital that no child falls off the local services radar and we agree with calls for a register of home-schooled children.”
