Scarlets will get the 2016-17 European Rugby Champions Cup campaign underway at Parc y Scarlets this Saturday evening buoyed by three back-to-back wins in the GUINNESS PRO12 after a slow start to the competitive season.

The only Welsh representative in this season’s Champions Cup have been drawn in pool three alongside champions Saracens, former triple champions Toulon and Sale Sharks.

The campaign gets underway at the Parc on Saturday night when Scarlets welcome Sale Sharks and head coach Wayne Pivac says his side will be fighting fit for the challenge.

“We’ll be going out giving it everything we’ve got to get a result. We’ll worry about the other games when they come along. The home games are must win if you want to get out of the pool. We have to make sure we cash in on the good start with round one at home. We’re certainly looking at it as the first game of a new campaign and we want to get off with the best possible start.

“What is clear is we’re in a very tough pool, but having said that, the majority of them are pretty tough.

“I think it’s a good thing from a players’ point of view, if I was a player out there I’d want to pit myself against some of the best.

“Defending champions Saracens are a formidable opponent, and the way they played on the weekend against Wasps just reinforces that!

“Toulon are triple champions and Sale Sharks present a different challenge again with the might of their forward pack, they have one of the biggest drive games around.”

The opening clash of the campaign offers plenty for Scarlets supporters to get exited about including the return of Bancyfelin’s very own Mike Phillips.

Pivac went on to say; “We’re happy with the draw in terms of getting a home game first. I think it’s important in this competition to get off to a flying start if you’re going to do well. Hopefully there’s a good crowd here this evening to cheer the boys on.

“Everyone likes playing at home and we’re no different. We probably didn’t show the home advantage on the weekend that we would have liked but it’s part and parcel of what we’re doing with the group at the moment.”
