Small Business Saturday – Secure A Stronger Future For Our Town Centre…

Sean Rees, Plaid Cymru’s Campaign Manager in Llanelli has today showed his support for Small Business Saturday.

Sean outlined the Party of Wales’ plans to support small or independent shops across Wales, and to encourage shoppers to consider their local high street as they do their shopping this Christmas.

“Today is Small Business Saturday and we’re happy to show our support because turning around our economy is a priority for us in the Party of Wales.

“Small businesses are the backbone of Wales’ economy. They make up 98% of all Welsh businesses and are a lifeline to our economy therefore we are concerned with the decline we continue to see in footfall on our high streets.

“We’ve all seen the effects of decisions that have been taken under successive Governments and the economic crisis with our own eyes especially the impact on our Town Centre here.

“The competition posed by large multi-national companies and by internet trading also makes it difficult for local traders to compete therefore I urge people to consider their local high street as they do their shopping this Christmas.

“Our market is the jewel in the crown for our Town Centre. We must do all we can to continue to support our traders who often work in difficult economic conditions. We need more independent shops which can offer something different to what can be found at the out of town retail park at Trostre.

“Plaid Cymru’s plans include a focus on buying locally so that public bodies give more contracts to local companies, keeping money in the local economy. This has the potential to create up to 50,000 extra jobs in Wales. A business rates relief scheme which would help 83,000 businesses in Wales and take 70,000 out of paying business rates altogether. We would also help our small businesses further by establishing a Welsh business bank to make it easier for them to access the finance they need.

“Those of us that live and work here locally have witnessed all the changes over the years that have affected our Town Centre. We want to hear from you about your ideas and what you see as the challenges that need to be overcome in order to secure a stronger future for our Town Centre.”
