Calls for Senedd rebrand ‘overdue, but welcome’

Calls for the Assembly’s name to be changed are ‘long overdue, but welcome’ according to Welsh Conservative Leader – Andrew RT Davies.

The Presiding Officer has today launched a consultation asking the people of Wales how its name could be changed to reflect its role and increased responsibilities.

Mr Davies has led from the front in this campaign, first calling for the Assembly’s name to be changed in 2012, writing for the Guardian.

The South Wales Central AM has long called for the Assembly to be a “proper Welsh parliament”, not least because it would strengthen the distinction between the legislature and executive and boost public awareness of where accountability lies.

Mr Davies said:

“The time has come for Wales’s devolved institution to lose the ‘Assembly’ tag and brand itself as a proper Welsh parliament – strengthening the distinction between legislature and executive, while giving it the accolade the people of Wales afforded it in the 2011 referendum.

“The process for this to happen is very simple. One small amendment to the Government of Wales Act 2006 would be all that needs to change the National Assembly for Wales into the Welsh parliament.

“No expensive rebrand, no new buildings, no new protocol, but what a statement it would be!”
