It will an all Welsh language affair next Thursday 19th January as three schools battle it out to be crowned Welsh Year 7 National Champions.

In a format, slightly different to normal years, three schools, all of whom are Welsh speaking, have qualified for the final and will play against each other in a round robin style tournament to be crowned winners.

Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni (Gellihaf Campus), Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf and Ysgol Gyfun Ystalyfera will play at the all new 3G pitch at Ysgol Y Gwyndy, Cwm Rhymni’s sister site in Caerphilly.

All three sides have a strong tradition of winning the Year 7 final with the last two champions being Glantaf and Ystalyfera winning in 2015 and 2016 respectively. Glantaf famously then went on to win the national competition at Wembley Stadium. The Wembley final is again the eventual goal for these three Welsh sides.

The schedule is as follows:

Game 1: 1:30pm kick off

Glantaf v Cwm Rhymni

Game 2 – 2:10pm kick off

Ystalyfera v Glantaf

Game 3 – 2:40pm kick off

Cwm Rhymni v Ystalyfera

The winner of the contest will then go on to represent Wales in the first national round of the Champion Schools competition on January 31st in a game to be played at Maidenhead RFC.  Next week’s final matches will be good preparation for the national rounds as Maidenhead RFC is also a 3G surface.
