Welsh Conservatives have welcomed an announcement by the Welsh Government that it will contribute to the University of Wales Trinity St David’s “ambitious” plans to create an innovative hub for the creative industries in Carmarthen.
The Welsh Government announced the decision after 18 months of pressure from Welsh Conservatives, including local AM – Angela Burns – who called said the project could “unleash” the region’s enormous creative drive.
Shadow Economy/Culture Secretary, Russ George, said:
“We have been pressing the Welsh Government to commit to this project for some time, so this announcement provides welcome clarification.
“There is broad support, not just from S4C itself, but from the local council and a great number of local businesses.
“I’m sure they will join us in welcoming this investment, which will be a huge boost to the region.”
Carmarthenshire West & South Pembrokeshire AM, Angela Burns said:
“This project is of huge cultural and economic significance to Carmarthenshire and I have been its champion from day one.
“Many rural and industrial parts of Wales have been left behind, and I make no apologies for battling to ensure that Carmarthenshire doesn’t become one of them.
“West Wales is an area with enormous creative drive and I am very much looking forward to seeing this untapped reservoir of talent unleashed by the project.”
Welsh Conservative spokesperson for the Swansea City Deal, Suzy Davies, also added:
“Part of Yr Egin is a key component of the Swansea Bay City Deal and this announcement removes one of the risks to a plan which has the potential to transform this region well beyond Carmarthenshire”.
