Wales has a bright future, but we cannot allow pessimism or negativity to hold us back

The leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, has today called on Wales’ political leaders to unite behind the Brexit effort, to ensure that Wales’ future can be as bright as “its rich and illustrious past”.

He also issued a challenge to the political establishment to curb the “relentless negativity” of recent months, warning that pessimism and negativity could hold Wales back from an opportunity to remould the Welsh economy.

He said:

“During the referendum, we often heard about the whirlwind of uncertainty that Brexit could unleash. But it’s the relentless negativity of the political establishment here in Wales that poses the greatest threat to our future prosperity.

“Wales is a country built on the foundations of its rich industrial past – and whose future promises to be just as bright, if we can only grasp the opportunities that lay ahead.

“We cannot allow the pessimism or negativity of Labour and Plaid Cymru to hold us back as we approach a momentous period in our history.

“Brexit has divided opinion, but for the country as a whole it is without question a fantastic opportunity to remould the Welsh economy, and to rediscover our resourceful, creative and industrious best.”

Commenting on claims that Wales would be worse off after Brexit, the Welsh Conservative Leader said it was time to get behind the Prime Minister – who has committed to delivering for the whole of the UK.

He said:

“The Prime Minister is determined to make a success of Brexit, and she will put the preservation of our precious union at the heart of everything her government does.

“Wales will not be an afterthought and we will not be worse off as a result of leaving the European Union. But if we are to achieve our full potential and ensure that the opportunity to reboot the Welsh economy is taken, we need the best and brightest in this country to work together.

“Our mission as a country must be to ensure that Wales’ future is as glorious as its rich and illustrious past.

“Sadly, the language being used by some Labour and Plaid politicians amounts to wilful sabotage and it is only by coming together as one great union of nations and people that we can make the most of the opportunities that lay ahead.”
