The chairman and vice-chairwoman of the beleaguered quango Sport Wales have been sacked by the Welsh Government, it has been announced.

Responding to the news, Russell George AM, Welsh Conservative Shadow Secretary for Sport, said:

“These dismissals leave us none-the-wiser as to what went so spectacularly wrong in the board of Sport Wales.

“With the triggering of article 50 underway, it seems the Welsh Government picked a fine day to bury bad news. Given that Sport Wales receives over £22m of public money annually, we deserve much greater transparency from the Welsh Government, who I will be writing to with a view to the outgoing chair’s review being released.

“Its reputation now damaged, Sport Wales will today be licking its wounds. There must be no further disruption to its day-to-day running and that the Welsh Government maps out a long-term plan that will enable grassroots and elite-level sport to prosper.”
