Labour’s plan for Wales would endanger the economy, say Welsh Conservatives

The country’s economic prosperity would be at risk under a Labour Government say the Welsh Conservatives, ahead of an Assembly debate on Wednesday.

Leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies, will lead the plenary debate contrasting Labour’s “disorganised, rudderless” leadership with the strong and stable leadership provided by Theresa May’s Conservative Party.

Welsh Conservatives will highlight First Minister – Carwyn Jones’ – public endorsement of a proposal by Jeremy Corbyn to borrow an extra £500 billion, a move which would “endanger the future of the Welsh economy”.

They will also point to Welsh Labour’s poor economic record, having endorsed a number of disastrous investment results for the Welsh taxpayer.

The debate motion in full:

To propose that the National Assembly for Wales:

• Notes that Wales and the United Kingdom requires strong and stable leadership to continue the country’s economic prosperity.
• Regrets the First Minister’s public endorsement of a proposal to borrow an extra £500bn which would endanger the future of the Welsh economy.
• Recognises the importance of financial credibility and for policies to be fully-costed to ensure Wales and the UK’s economic progress is not put at risk by a laissez-faire attitude to taxpayers’ money.

Speaking ahead of the Conservative debate, Andrew RT Davies said voters face a choice on June 8 between the strong, stable leadership of Theresa May and a coalition of chaos with Labour, the Lib Dems and assorted nationalists.

He said:

“This is the most important election in Britain for many generations, and the country faces a choice between the strong, stable leadership of Theresa May or a disorganised, rudderless coalition of chaos led by Jeremy Corbyn.

“Each vote for Labour puts Jeremy Corbyn one step closer to walking into Downing Street propped up by the Lib Dems and a cabal of nationalists, to take charge of our Brexit negotiations.

“A vote for Labour would endanger the Welsh economy, handing the keys to Labour and to Corbyn and Carwyn, who have an irresponsible plan to borrow an extra £500 billion.

“We simply cannot afford to take that risk.

“Every vote across the country, wherever you live, will count in this election. Every vote for the Conservatives will strengthen Theresa May’s hand in the negotiations to secure the best deal for our country, lock-in our growing economy and make life in our great country even better.”
