CANDIDATES ANNOUNCED FOR THE 8th JUNE SNAP GENERAL ELECTION

With the County Council elections behind us, the Welsh Liberal Democrats in Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire are pleased to announce their candidates for the forthcoming snap General Election on 8th June 2017.

The Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire Liberal Democrat Local Party covers the 4 Parliamentary constituencies, shown below, along with their chosen Candidate.

Carmarthen East & Dinefwr – Lesley Prosser

Carmarthen West & South Pembrokeshire – Alistair Cameron

Llanelli – Rory Daniels

Preseli Pembrokeshire – Bob Kilmister

Chair of Carmarthenshire & Pembrokeshire Liberal Democrats, Andrew Lye, said “We have been making provisional plans for a possible snap election since Theresa May took over as Prime Minister in July 2016. We were right to do so. Despite the continuous noises made that there would not be one, the Prime Minister finally went against her word.”

“Our Local Party has seen its membership grow since 2015 and 20 new members signed up in the week following the announcement of the snap general election. I accept that we start from a low base in the 2 counties, but we have been building our structures to ensure the Lib

Dem Fight Back continues since the UK narrowly voted to Leave the EU, last June. We had hoped to make one or two gains in the 4th May County elections, but the announcement of the General Election, saw a swing towards the Tories.”

“I can confirm that Alistair Cameron and Bob Kilmister stood in the Welsh Assembly elections, last May. Indeed, Bob Kilmister had one of the best Welsh Liberal Democrat results, across Wales, on what was otherwise not a good day for our Party, as UKIP made gains. But we hope to get them back in 2020 as UKIP implode and have been absorbed back into May’s Conservatives. UKIP would now appear to be past their sell by date”.

“Lesley Prosser, our candidate in Carmarthen East & Dinefwr joined the party just over a year ago and was a local organiser for the Remain group in Carmarthenshire. Lesley was also a candidate in the Carmarthenshire County Council elections and came a respectable 2nd in the Llandeilo ward.”

“Our final candidate, Rory Daniels, is also a relative newcomer to the Welsh Liberal Democrats. At just 19 years of age, he has got to be one of the youngest candidates in our party and possibly one of the youngest standing for ANY party, across the UK. Rory is in his 1st year at King’s College, London, studying Political Economy. His roles include Vice President of the UN World Food Programme Society, and a campus tour guide. In his spare time, Rory also volunteers as a tour guide for the RNLI in Mumbles. His family home is on the Gower. I am proud that we have a young candidate as he will give a new perspective on the issues and how they affect the young. After all, it’s Rory’s generation that will lose most from Brexit. The opportunities that have been there for the last 40 odd years, are now likely to go.”

Andrew Lye concluded by saying “That while the General Election is obviously about Theresa May’s plan for Brexit (if there is one), the Liberal Democrat position is that we accept the Referendum decision, but we would prefer to remain inside the EU and the Single Market and that as we are a democracy, we believe that the British voters should vote on the final deal that Theresa May negotiates. After all, voters were not aware of what type of Brexit they were voting for in June 2016. But this election is also about the other issues, such as the NHS. The Liberal Democrats have already announced they would put 1p on income tax to raise £6bn to fund the NHS and social care. £300m of that will come to the

Welsh NHS. Also, the Liberal Democrats have announced that they will retain the “triple lock” on pensions, whilst there is talk that the Tories are intent on removing it. However, more policies will be announced over coming weeks as the manifesto is launched in the next few days.”
