During a site visit this week, Cllr Anthony Taylor, Deputy Leader of Neath Port Talbot Council was pleased to see that significant progress has been made on the new Integrated Transport Hub project in Port Talbot. With the installation of a steel frame glass canopy and paving works to the concourse areas, the project is now entering its final stage of development.
The new Integrated Transport Hub will centralise main transport links including Port Talbot Parkway station, a new bus terminal, cycle facilities, a taxi rank and drop-off and pick-up bays in a largely pedestrian-dominated concourse, providing easier access for all to employment and residential areas in and around the town.
This improvement is part of the on-going construction of the Council’s new £5.6m Integrated Transport Hub which complements the £11.3m redevelopment of Port Talbot Parkway Railway Station by Network Rail in 2016.
The Port Talbot Integrated Transport Hub forms part of the Council’s Regeneration Programme, funded by the Welsh Government through both their Local Transport Fund and Vibrant & Viable Places funding, which has been matched by EU funds to complete the project.
The construction of the new Integrated Transport Hub has bought many community benefits to the area. The scheme has created opportunities for the local supply chain and contractors, generating employment and training opportunities for local people. The project has also supported or sponsored a number of community initiatives, such as Taibach Mini RFC, the Port Talbot Sea Scouts and the Afante Ladies choir.
The scheme is also leading the way in recycling and is forecast to achieve and exceed environmental sustainability and waste targets set by the Welsh Government.
Council Deputy Leader Cllr Anthony Taylor said: “An important milestone has been reached and it is now possible to see how the Port Talbot Integrated Transport Hub project will look and function.
“The new Integrated Transport Hub has provided a number of community benefits for the county borough. We want to ensure that projects like this benefit the whole area; providing jobs, work placements and qualifications for trainees and apprentices wherever possible.
“It has been an immensely important development for the area and judging by progress to date, it has been a huge success in many areas. This scheme will enhance the image of Port Talbot as a key gateway to the county borough”.
