A £2million redevelopment has turned a former social centre in Llanelli into the first ‘Centre of Economic Inclusion’ (CEI) in Wales.
The newly-opened Coleshill Centre aims to improve the lives and outcomes of disabled and disadvantaged people, by building an enterprise-based community which will provide a
wide-range of opportunities.
The ground-breaking venture will promote economic and social inclusion; provide support, training, employment, development and community opportunities for disabled, vulnerable, disadvantaged and long-term unemployed people.
At the same time it will encourage social and economic development and work together with other groups and organisations who share the same goals.
Jon Hobden, Senior Development Manager for the Coleshill project: “The centre will continue to provide social, networking and peer support but, in addition, is providing training facilities, such as IT, catering and woodwork, support for people who want to create small businesses, health improvement, advisory services, therapies and rehabilitation support.”
The redevelopment has been funded through Carmarthenshire County Council’s capital grant programme and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) via the ADREF project, as well as the Targeted Match Fund (TMF) through the Welsh Government.
The Centre’s management is supported by a committee of local people representing disability groups and other interested parties. It has recently opened its doors to service users.
The leader of Carmarthenshire County Council, Kevin Madge said: “The Council is committed to providing first-class services to disabled and disadvantaged people in the county.”
Coleshill Centre was built in the mid-1980s, first as a residential care home and, later, as a day centre for disabled people and is to become sustainable through innovative and inclusive projects, managed by service users and supported by Centre management.
Cllr Madge added: “I am proud that Carmarthenshire continues to lead the way, informing the debate around independent living and boasting the first Centre of its kind in Wales.”
