Electronic sports, esports, have shown significant growth in recent years. In fact, this form of sports has seen more players become professional, competing in competitions. There has also been an expansion in the variety of games. Given these trends, there is much discussion if the electronic sports world has become as large as real sports.

Esports have made it possible for those who may not possess the physical dexterity and acumen to play sports. They can still experience the thrill of the game along with the mental strategy that goes into any sport. Electronic sports require many of the same skills necessary to win at real sports. While some people continue to hold a negative stigma towards gaming, technology has advanced that it makes esports even more competitive. Players no longer are isolated simply playing alone or with another player in their home. People are actually playing with others across the globe. This has also led to tournaments where followers of games will compete for a prize. The pay-outs at some of these tournaments are rather large and provide additional evidence to the momentum esports have gained recently.

Both esports and real sports exist as forms of entertainment. Some places are seeing stadiums once filled with real sporting events replaced by electronic sports. South Korea has really embraced the movement with football stadiums once used to host the 2002 FIFA Game now being filled with esports fans. The industry as a whole saw significant growth between 2014 and 2016 with a 43% increase in audience sizes. Another result of this has been increased revenue. With these kinds of statistics, it is safe to say esports are as popular as real sports. There is also discussion of adding esports to the 2024 Olympics. If this occurs, this will provide further support of the merit of esports.

The esports industry is sure to grow in coming years with more and more games being released every year as well as new leagues being created. New developments in technology could further solidify esports place in the sports world.
