Recycling provision in north of county under review

A REVIEW of recycling and waste disposal provision in the north of Carmarthenshire is being carried out to look at options for the future.

It follows the closure of the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) in Llangadog earlier this year.

WRAP Cymru is supporting the council through the Welsh Government sponsored Collaborative Change Programme to undertake this review.

It includes an options appraisal identifying catchment areas for sites throughout the north of the county, not just in the Llangadog area; carrying out site searches and considering the development of a new permanent site, operating mobile sites or the potential for shared sites with neighbouring authorities. 

It is hoped the report will be completed by the end of November and the council can then consider its recommendations.

In the meantime, further waste amnesties are being held including a further two in Llandovery on November 25 and in March (date to be confirmed). These two amnesties are being held on Saturdays instead of during the week following feedback from residents. It also means more vehicles will be available offering greater capacity for waste disposal.

Executive Board Member for the Environment Cllr Hazel Evans said: “There are currently four HWRC sites in Carmarthenshire at Llanelli, Ammanford, Carmarthen and Whitland with no sites in the north of the county. With the closure of Llangadog, this review is much needed and has come at the right time.

“There is a large rural area of Carmarthenshire where we need to look at future provision and the review will help us to identify the most suitable areas for potential sites, whether that is a permanent site or mobile sites.

“Of all the waste collected from the HWRCs, Llangadog accounted for just 3.8% of that total. We need to make sure that sites are cost-effective to run, accessible to residents and that we capture as much recycling as possible in order to achieve our commitments under the Wales Waste Strategy – Towards Zero Waste.

“The waste amnesties have proved to be highly successful and as a result a further two will be held in Llandovery on the weekend to satisfy public demand.”

Residents are being reminded that there is no limit on the number of blue bags that can be put out for collection.

There are a number of local recycling banks throughout the county, to find your nearest please visit our website. Black bag waste, garden waste, electricals, wood and other waste should be taken to the nearest recycling centres at Wernddu near Ammanford or Nantycaws, Carmarthen.
