CARMARTHENSHIRE celebrated the ghosts of its past on the weekend with a variety of events to mark the 2017 Year of Legends.
Lord Rhys of Deheubarth made an appearance at the Chwedlau Caerfyrddin event on Saturday at Carmarthen Castle where he told the story of his remarkable exploits from the 12th century.
He was joined by local music, crafts and guided tours around the town telling the stories of its rich history.
The event, which was organised by Yr Atom, in partnership with Carmarthen Town Council and the Children’s Festival of Welsh History and funded by Carmarthenshire County Council’s event support fund, also coincided with the annual Sheriffs of England and Wales Annual General Meeting, which saw over a hundred of the UK’s past and present sheriffs gather in the town.
Cllr Peter Hughes Griffiths, Executive Board Member for Culture, Sport and Tourism, said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the Sheriffs AGM to Carmarthen and to support the Chwedlau Caerfyrddin event in the town.
“Heritage is a vital part of what gives an area its sense of place and it is important to showcase Carmarthenshire’s colourful history to both residents and visitors alike.”
Elsewhere in Carmarthenshire, the Llandovery Sheep Festival, which took place on September 23 and 24 celebrated the town’s droving past with all things woolly!
The unique and popular annual event, which attracted around 5000 people is estimated to have brought in around £158,000 to the local economy.
Festival organiser, Chris Olchawski, said: “The Sheep Festival is an important part of Llandovery’s calendar.
“The event brings many people to the town from far and wide and really puts us on the map. We are grateful for the support we have received from Carmarthenshire County Council.”
