Ben Nevis

Ben Nevis is the highest mountain peak in Great Britain, located in Scotland. It attracts about 150.000 people annually, who hike or attempt to climb it. One of whom, being me. A local trip was being organised to go to Ben Nevis, and I signed up immediately. Being able to hike

Ben Nevis was  a once in a lifetime opportunity and I did not want to miss it.

Kit wise…  more kit was needed than for, say, a normal Snowdon climbing trip.

Kit list

  • Waterproof trousers
  • Fleece
  • Mini first aid kit
  • Hats and gloves
  • 2 litres of water
  • Plenty of food and snacks
  • Walking trousers
  • Anti blister socks
  • Walking boots
  • Moisture wicking top
  • Base layer top
  • Waterproof jacket

We went in late September, towards Autumn, thus being the colder end of the year, so a few extra warm items of clothing were necessary.

We arrived at the starting point, to set off nice and early in the morning, when  it was relatively quiet. Ben Nevis looked stunning. There was a good group of us, so support was there throughout.

The weather was beautiful, as we climbed higher and higher.  It got hotter, so we took off the top essential layers in order to cool down, and found the moisture wicking tops were ideal for this hike. The sweat was dripping off all of us. Luckily, I had a towel for drying off.

The hike itself wasn’t too difficult, even though  it was very steep and long. The paths tended to weave in a zig-zag direction, all the way up the mountain, which took up the majority of our time. The great thing throughout was that the mountain was very quiet compared to the likes of Snowdon.

As we got closer to the summit it became extremely foggy. Suddenly the skies turned grey and dark. But, the fog didn’t dampen my experience though. What we could all see of  the views were still stunning.

When I reached the top it was such a feeling of achievement and a great buzz. At the summit it was crowded with people. There were so many happy faces including ours. One item ticked off the bucket list. A goal achieved. A great feeling. A once in a lifetime achievement.
