SP ENERGY NETWORKS SUPPORTING
RGC WOMENS TEAMS
SP Energy Networks are proud to be match day sponsors for the RGC Women’s and RGC Under 18’s Girls rugby teams ahead of the squad’s first ever home match in the Regional Championship on 26th November.
The landmark match at Stadiwm Zip World against the Scarlets women’s team will be the first time a senior women’s squad has represented North Wales on home turf. SP Energy Networks will present the ‘Player of the Match’ at Sunday’s game.
The introduction of the RGC Women’s team in North Wales provides an opportunity for female players to progress at a regional level and to get access to national coaches. Along with the RGC Under 18’s Girls team it is hoped both teams will provide a pathway for female players from North Wales to join the Welsh national squad in future years.
SP Energy Networks became an official sponsor of RGC in November 2016 and has supported initiatives to encourage girls and women into rugby at all levels. The number of young women playing organised rugby in North Wales has doubled in just a year, following a successful sponsorship of RGC and the Wales U20 rugby squad.
WRU REGIONAL COORDINATOR AND WELSH WOMEN’S INTERNATIONAL RACHEL TAYLOR SAID:
“Sunday 26th November 2017 is going to be a landmark event for girls and women’s rugby in North Wales and we are delighted to be receiving the continued support from SP Energy Networks. The growth of the sport across the region couldn’t be achieved without the positive support of the likes of SP Energy Networks, they truly understand our clubs and communities and are passionate about working from grass roots up to ensure we have a healthy and vibrant future for the sport across the North Wales region”
SP Energy Networks, which owns and manages the network of underground cables and power lines for North Wales, is committed to supporting communities in North Wales through an extensive programme of local sponsorships and community engagement programmes. These include a community education programme for North Wales schools on power safety.
Alongside squad sponsorships, SP Energy Networks sponsors home fixtures at Stadiwm Zip World at Parc Eirias. It has created a new interactive ‘fan zone’ to engage pre-match with fans by giving them the chance to put their rugby skills to the test, while learning more about power safety and what to do in a power cut.
Ahead of home matches, the WRU North Wales Participation Team and SP Energy Networks invite local rugby clubs’ junior teams to take part in pre-match engagement activity sessions which are run and managed by the North Wales Development Team and supported by Community Coaches, RGC squad members and RGC Academy players.
STEPHEN STEWART, DIRECTOR AT SP ENERGY NETWORKS, SAID: “Over the last year we’ve helped RGC and WRU double the number of women and girls playing organised rugby in North Wales. The next stage of our work to support women in sport is our sponsorship of the RGC Senior Women’s team.
“Supporting RGC and its community rugby projects in North Wales gives SP Energy Networks the chance to meet fans, talk face-to-face about our work in their community and to share critical power safety messaging. It’s our job to keep the lights on in North Wales and we do it with pride.”
Over the next eight years, SP Energy Networks will invest 800 million to maintain and improve the power supply network in North Wales. SP Energy Networks manages approximately 9,605km of underground cables and 1,245km of overhead power lines that connect over 375,000 homes and local businesses. The company employs more than 380 staff and 700 contractors in North and Mid Wales, and anticipates an intake of 300 new staff members over the next five years.
