Council hit by theft of gully covers

Thieves have stolen seven gully covers from roads across Llanelli.

Council leaders have hit out at those responsible. They say their reckless behaviour is putting the safety of road-users and pedestrians at risk.

It will also cost approximately £1,400 to replace them.

The gully covers were discovered missing from Stafford Street, Dolau Road, New Dock Road and Florence Terrace in Llanelli on Saturday morning.

Council staff have now made the areas safe and are arranging for replacement covers to be fitted as soon as possible.

On the same day batteries were also stolen from hired traffic lights In Copperworks Road which is in close proximity to where the gullies were taken.

The incidents have been reported to the police who are investigating. It is thought the covers have been stolen for their scrap value.

Residents are now being asked to be vigilant and to report any suspicious or unusual activity, particularly outside of normal working hours.

Executive Board Member for environment, Cllr Hazel Evans said: “There has been a spate of thefts of gully covers over the weekend in Llanelli.

“This is extremely dangerous and could result in a serious accident. The cost of replacing these covers is something we could really do without and the money could be much better spent on essential maintenance works and frontline services.

“If anyone has any information which may help, please report it to the police.”

The council and police are working together under the Community Safety Partnership to tackle metal theft.

Lladron yn dwyn cloriau cwteri

Mae lladron wedi dwyn saith o gloriau cwteri o ffyrdd yn Llanelli.

Mae arweinyddion y Cyngor wedi beirniadu’r lladron hyn yn llym. Dywed yr arweinyddion fod ymddygiad di-hid y lladron yn peryglu pobl sy’n defnyddio’r ffyrdd yn enwedig cerddwyr.

Bydd yn costio rhyw £1,400 i’r Cyngor osod cloriau newydd.

Canfuwyd bod y cloriau cwteri ar goll yn Stafford Street, Dolau Road, Heol y Doc Newydd a Florence Terrace yn Llanelli ar fore Sadwrn.

Mae staff y Cyngor bellach wedi sicrhau bod y mannau lle dygwyd y cloriau yn ddiogel, ac mae trefniadau ar waith i osod cloriau newydd cyn gynted ag y bo modd.

Hefyd, ar yr un diwrnod, cafodd batris eu dwyn o’r goleuadau traffig ar log yn Heol Copperworks sy’n agos at yr ardal lle cafodd y cloriau eu dwyn.

Rhoddwyd gwybod am y digwyddiadau i’r heddlu sy’n ymchwilio i’r mater. Credir bod y cloriau wedi eu dwyn oherwydd eu gwerth fel sgrap.

Bellach gofynnir i drigolion y sir fod yn wyliadwrus a rhoi gwybod am unrhyw ymddygiad amheus neu anarferol, yn enwedig ar ôl oriau gwaith arferol.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Hazel Evans, yr Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol dros yr Amgylchedd: “Mae nifer o gloriau cwteri wedi eu dwyn dros y penwythnos yn Llanelli.

“Heb unrhyw amheuaeth mae hyn yn beryglus iawn a gallai achosi damwain ddifrifol. Mae cost gosod cloriau newydd yn rhywbeth gallem wneud hebddi a byddai’n llawer gwell i’r arian hwn gael ei wario ar waith cynnal a chadw hanfodol ac ar wasanaethau rheng flaen.

“Os oes gan unrhyw un wybodaeth a allai fod o gymorth, rhoddwch wybod am hynny i’r heddlu.”

Mae’r cyngor a’r heddlu’n cydweithio drwy’r Bartneriaeth Diogelwch Cymunedol i fynd i’r afael â lladrata metel.
