Celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day with a few Welsh words
Aren’t we lucky in Wales? We have our own day to celebrate romance and love on January 25th, known as St Dwynwen’s day. The Welsh language could compete with French as the language of love as we have a plethora of words to say ‘hug’, ‘kiss’ etc.
Mentrau Iaith Cymru (Welsh Language Enterprises) – an organisation supporting 22 Mentrau Iaith across Wales in encouraging and supporting the use of the language in every day life, has designed a leaflet with a list of the most useful words to use on the most cwtshlyd (full of hugs) of days. The Welsh word for hug, cwtsh / cwtch, has long taken hold with the population, it’s about time that other words work their way onto our lips too.
So, the next time you ask for a kiss, why not ask for a cusan or a sws? Give your loved one an anrheg of blodau. Enjoy the romantic side of St Dwynwen’s day by showing your love to each other, and also to the Welsh language – iaith cariad.
