Christmas and New Year refuse/recycling collections

RESIDENTS are being reminded that there are changes to refuse and recycling collections over the festive period.

Collections are taking place on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve as normal, however there are no collections on Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year’s Day.

This means that from Tuesday, December 25 until Friday, December 28, collections will take place two days later than usual. So for example, if your collection is due on the Friday it won’t be picked up until the Sunday.

From Tuesday, January 1 until Friday, January 4, collections will take place one day later than usual; so again if your usual collection day is Friday, your waste will not be picked up until the Saturday.

With all the eating, drinking and parties we tend to produce a lot more rubbish at this time of the year which is why it’s more important than ever to try and limit the amount of waste we produce and recycle as much as possible.

Please use your blue bags to recycle plastic bottles, tubs and trays, metal cans, and cardboard packaging and wrapping paper and cards.

Unavoidable Christmas food waste such as turkey bones, nutshells and vegetable peelings should go in your green bin so that it can be collected by our crews and taken for composting, rather than mixing it up with black bag rubbish which is sent to landfill causing harm to the environment.

Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “We produce a lot more rubbish at Christmas so it is important we recycle as much as we can.

“We also consume approximately 10 million turkeys over Christmas in the UK so it makes sense we dispose of this type of waste (turkey carcass) and all other food waste responsibly. It really is easy and just means separating your food waste into a caddy to ensure it gets disposed of in an environmentally-friendly way by the council.”

The recycling centres in Trostre (Llanelli), Wernddu (Ammanford), Nantycaws (Carmarthen) and Whitland are open 8.30am-12pm and Llangadog 10am-4pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

All are closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Residents are also being reminded that they can sign up to the council’s text messaging or email alert service for latest news including information on refuse / recycling collections. Text ‘sign up’ to 0789 2345678 or email direct@carmarthenshire.gov.uk
