New ‘Cawl Crawl’ Food Trail
A NEW Cawl Crawl food trail across Carmarthenshire is being launched just in time for St David’s Day.
The trail, which has been developed by Discover Carmarthenshire, aims to tempt people to try out the many creative takes that have been developed from the traditional lamb broth recipe, from switching to local ham and infusing with beer to serving with Welshman’s caviar.
There is a total of 17 eateries featured on the crawl (ranging from cosy pubs to gourmet delis) where customers can enjoy stories behind each bowl and experience the different recipes, secret ingredients and twists on the old favourite!
The Cawl Crawl was first launched in 2015 and is returning due to popular demand, bigger than ever with lots of new establishments on board. Each business taking part will be serving steaming hot bowls between 1 March- 30 April 2018.
Choices include taking away a steaming pot of Welsh Ham Cawl served with Y Fenni cheese and Welshman’s Caviar (dried and toasted laver seaweed) from the Ginhaus Deli in Llandeilo to make a picnic of it. Or hunker down fireside at one of the oldest thatched inns in Wales, The White Hart, for a signature Cawl infused with beer and pearl barley. In Llanelli, Sosban is serving Cawl with potato terrine and goats curd, while the Cawl at Wright’s Food Emporium is a firm favourite, made using ham hock, shoulder of lamb, plenty of veggies and served alongside Hafod Cheddar and homemade granary bread.
Another great stop is Maddocks General Store, in Upper Tumble which offers a hearty Cawl made from tender Welsh beef with parsley, peas and its secret seasoning, while The Forest Arms, a village pub with open fires in the Cothi Valley, serves slow-cooked lamb Cawl with rustic torn bread and mature Welsh Cheddar. The Plash Inn near Whitland is even offering free Cawl during all Welsh Six Nations games!
Carmarthenshire’s rich food history is perfectly represented through the dish, having been a staple on the county’s foodie map for centuries. Simon Wright from Wright’s Food Emporium said: “While Cawl is traditionally made to a recipe using local mutton or lamb it is always open to interpretation, and that’s what makes sampling it across the county so special. With slow-cooked meat and a delicious stock, crammed full of root veggies, leeks and wild garlic, it’s perfect fuel for the winter months and really showcases slow food at its best.”

MAE llwybr bwyd O Gawl i Gawl newydd yn cael ei lansio mewn pryd ar gyfer Dydd Gŵyl Dewi.
Lluniwyd y llwybr gan Ddarganfod Sir Gâr, a’r nod yw denu pobl i roi cynnig ar y fersiynau creadigol sydd wedi’u datblygu o’r rysáit cawl cig oen traddodiadol, o ddefnyddio ham lleol ac ychwanegu cwrw, neu ei fwyta gyda chafiâr y Cymro.
Mae’r llwybr yn cynnwys cyfanswm o 17 bwyty (gydag amrywiaeth o dafarndai cysurus i ddelis arbennig) lle gall cwsmeriaid fwynhau’r straeon hanesyddol a blasu’r gwahanol ryseitiau, cynhwysion cyfrinachol a fersiynau cyfoes o’r hen ffefryn!
Lansiwyd O Gawl i Gawl yn 2015, ac mae’n dod yn ôl gan ei fod mor boblogaidd. Bydd yn fwy nag erioed eleni ac yn cynnwys llawer o sefydliadau newydd. Bydd pob busnes sy’n cymryd rhan yn gweini cawl poeth rhwng 1 Mawrth a 30 Ebrill 2018.
Ymysg y dewisiadau deniadol, gallwch gael Cawl Ham Cymreig gyda chaws Y Fenni a chafiâr y Cymro (gwymon wedi’i sychu a’i dostio) o Ginhaus Deli yn Llandeilo a chael picnic yn yr awyr agored. Neu gallwch ymlacio o amgylch y tân mewn un o dafarndai to gwellt hynaf Cymru, sef The White Hart, a blasu ei gawl unigryw a wneir â chwrw a haidd perlog. Yn Llanelli, mae bwyty Sosban yn gweini cawl gyda therîn tato a cheuled gafr, ac mae’r cawl yn Wright’s Food Emporium yn cynnwys cig coesgyn mochyn, cig ysgwydd oen a digonedd o lysiau. Gyda’r cawl rhoddir caws cheddar Hafod lleol, a bara graneri cartref.

Mae cawl yn crynhoi hanes bwyd Sir Gaerfyrddin i’r dim, gan ei fod wedi bod yn un o ffefrynnau’r sir ymhlith bwydgarwyr ers canrifoedd. Meddai Simon Wright o Wright’s Food Emporium: “Er bod cawl yn cynnwys cig dafad neu gig oen o’r Mynydd Du yn draddodiadol, mae bob amser yn agored i ddehongliad, a dyma beth sy’n sicrhau profiad mor arbennig pan fydd pobl yn ei flasu ledled y sir. Gan fod cawl yn cynnwys cig wedi’i goginio’n araf ac isgell blasus, llwyth o wreiddlysiau, cennin a garlleg gwyllt, mae’n berffaith ar gyfer y gaeaf ac mae’n enghraifft arbennig o fwyd wedi’i goginio’n araf.”
