OLDER people in Carmarthenshire are getting a helping hand to recycle their festive rubbish and leftover food.
The council’s waste section has teamed up with Age Cymru Sir Gar and Menter Cwm Gwendraeth to help residents aged 50 or over with their recycling.
Volunteers visit them at home and offer support and advice; helping them to separate their rubbish, explain what can and can’t go in the blue bag, and take their glass to the local bottle bank.
It is particularly important that we recycle at this time of the year as we tend to produce a lot more rubbish than at other times.
Plastic bottles, tubs and trays, metal cans, cardboard packaging and wrapping paper and cards can all be recycled in the blue bag
Unavoidable Christmas food waste such as turkey bones, nutshells and vegetable peelings can go in the green bin so that it can be composted and our glass jars and bottles can be taken to the local recycling site.
Residents are also being reminded that there are changes to refuse and recycling collections over Christmas and New Year.
From Tuesday, December 25 (Christmas Day) until Friday, December 28, collections will take place two days later than usual and from Tuesday, January 1 (New Year’s Day) until Friday, January 4, collections will take place one day later than usual.
Executive Board Member for Street Scene Cllr Colin Evans said: “The volunteers provide a valuable service and a friendly face for older people in the community that need support, particularly at this time of the year.
“This is an excellent project and is just one of a number of initiatives the council has to make it as easy as possible for people to recycle.”
