High Sheriff of Dyfed, Mrs Sue Balsom

This month the High Sheriff of Dyfed, Mrs Sue Balsom presented eleven Young Persons Awards with grants to support army, navy and air cadet training plus St John Cymru and Duke of Edinburgh activities, as well as respite for young carers.

The citations and awards were presented by the High Sheriff at a packed ceremony held at the Conrah Hotel, near Aberystwyth (on Saturday 24th March 2018). The event was also attended by HM Lord Lieutenant Miss Sara Edwards.

Congratulating the award winners, the High Sheriff commented, “On behalf of the Shrievalty of Dyfed,many congratulations on your achievements to date and for your hard work and commitment. We wish you well in all your endeavours and projects.”

HM Lord Lieutenant Miss Sara Edwards added, “May I congratulate all recipientson their impressive attainments and ambitions. I wish you good luck for the future.”

Award winners

Rhian Moremon (from Narberth) will undertake Duke of Edinburgh Gold Leadership training including completing a 50 mile canoe journey on the river Wye from Glasbury to Monmouth.

Hannah Bailey (from Narberth) from Preseli Pioneers Explorer Scout Group whose grant will help fund her trip to the 24th World Scout Jamboree in 2019 in West Virginia, USA.

Iestyn Navatte

*IestynNevatte (Pembroke Dock) is an Explorer Scoutwhose award will help fund his trip to the 24th World Scout Jamboree in 2019 in West Virginia, USA.

*Evelyn Jones (Goodwick)whose rank is Able Cadet in the West Wales Sea Cadets. Her grant will help fund her teamwork training on a seagoing yacht.

Evelyn Jones and Jago Clarke

*Jago Clarke (Milford Haven) an Able Cadet of the West Wales Sea Cadets who will undergo square rig training at sea on the ship T.S. Royalist.

David Folder

*David Folder (Milton, nr Tenby) is a Sargeantin the Royal Air Force Cadets who will undertake further training to extend his pilot’s licence to help instruct recruits.

Pembrokeshire & Ceredigion Young Carers

*Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion Young Carers received grants to help fund respite trips, breaks and activities for young people involved in caring for a parent, sibling or other relative with illness, disability, mental health or substance abuse issues.

Mitri Sharaiha

*Mitri Sharaiha (Llanelli)is a St John Cymru Sargeant and their National Cadet of the Year. He will travel to a Tibetan Children’s village where he will work with refugee children and help train them and adults in basic first aid.

Abigail Beckett

*Abigail Beckett (Haverfordwest) is a Cadet Warrant Officer with the Air Training Corps who will be participating in the International Air Cadets exchange programme in Australia this summer.

TomosMorgans (Boncath, Cardigan)is looking to complete his Duke of Edinburgh Gold award this year at a residential course in Llangrannog.

Faith Mackeen (Haverfordwest)is working towards her Duke of Edinburgh Silver award including several challenging outdoor pursuits.
