Council bans single-use plastics in its buildings

CARMARTHENSHIRE County Council has committed to reducing its use of single use plastics and to continue raising awareness of environmental issues.

Pontyberem ward councillor Liam Bowen raised the issue in a notice of motion to Wednesday’s full council asking for support to create more plastic-free schemes.

He called on members to lead the way in agreeing to ban single-use plastic cups and straws in council buildings and to promote the use of sustainable materials at all events supported by the council.

He also asked that the council commits to encouraging businesses, organisations, schools and communities to stop using single-use plastics and start using sustainable materials, and for the council to support beach cleans and other events to raise awareness of plastic-free schemes.

“It’s vitally important that Carmarthenshire County Council plays its part,” he said.

His motion drew support from all corners of the chamber.

Cllr Hazel Evans, executive board member for the environment, responded saying that the council works collaboratively within departments and external organisations to address issues and raise awareness.

She also called on the UK and Welsh governments to do something about plastic production and to trial deposit schemes.

The motion was unanimously supported.
