Car dealer is honoured with British Empire Medal
A Kidwelly businessman has been honoured with a British Empire Medal for his charity, sport and education work.
David Gravell, of Gravell’s Car Dealership, was presented with the award by HM Lord Lieutenant of Dyfed Miss Sara Edwards at a ceremony in Parc Myrddin, Carmarthen.
Mr Gravell is a firm supporter of Llandovery College and has served as a trustee for many years.
He has sponsored a young person from Patagonia from the age of 16 to university entry and has helped fund a cultural centre in Esquel which was opened in 2002. And has since provided the centre with a huge screen and projector so that people of Welsh origin are able to view TV recorded in Wales on S4C.
In 2012 he helped to fund a flat occupied by a young field worker from North Wales who would be spending another year in Esquel concentrating on youth work.
Mr Gravell is also the founder member of Cefn Sidan Rotary Club in 1971 and has since been awarded Rotary Citation in 2004 for raising £200,000 and further awarded with the Rotary’s Highest Award, the Paul Harris Triple Sapphire Award. He organised an evening that raised £10,000 for Mencap. He also supports Diabetes UK in memory of his late cousin Ray Gravell and donates to Kidwelly Town Bowling Club every year.

Mr Gravell is one of the major sponsors of the Scarlets RFC and Kidwelly RFC for over 30 years and sponsors countless events (including rugby tournaments), regularly providing major prizes for auctions and raffles. He was instrumental in setting up Kidwelly Trade and Tourism Association by organising various fundraising events.
Gravell’s Car Dealership was set up by Mr Gravell’s late father Tom. Today the business has passed into the hands of his sons, Ian and Jonathan with Mr Gravell remaining as chairman. The BEM is given for meritorious service worthy of recognition by the Crown. Carmarthenshire County Council’s civil registration service organises award ceremonies along with its other duties which include births, deaths and marriages.

Mae dyn busnes o Gydweli wedi cael ei anrhydeddu gyda Medal yr Ymerodraeth Brydeinig am ei waith elusennol a’i waith ym maes chwaraeon ac addysg.
Cyflwynwyd y wobr i David Gravell, o Gwmni Gwerthu Ceir Gravell, gan Arglwydd Raglaw Ei Mawrhydi yn Nyfed, Miss Sara Edwards mewn seremoni ym Mharc Myrddin, Caerfyrddin.
Mae Mr Gravell yn gefnogwr brwd o Goleg Llanymddyfri ac mae wedi gwasanaethu fel Ymddiriedolwr ers blynyddoedd lawer.
Mae wedi noddi person ifanc o Batagonia ers yn 16 oed i fynd i Brifysgol a helpu i ariannu canolfan ddiwylliannol yn Esquel a agorwyd yn 2002. Ers hynny mae wedi darparu taflunydd a sgrin enfawr i’r ganolfan er mwyn i bobl o dras Gymreig weld rhaglenni S4C a recordiwyd yng Nghymru.
Yn 2012, helpodd i ariannu fflat ar gyfer gweithiwr maes ifanc o Ogledd Cymru a fydd yn treulio blwyddyn arall yn Esquel yn canolbwyntio ar waith ieuenctid.
Mr Gravell hefyd yw un o sylfaenwyr Clwb Rotari Cefn Sidan (1971) ac ers hynny mae wedi derbyn Canmoliaeth gan y Rotari yn 2004 am godi £200,000, ac mae hefyd wedi derbyn Gwobr Uchaf y Rotari, sef Gwobr Saffir Triphlyg Paul Harris. Trefnodd noson a gododd £10,000 ar gyfer Mencap. Mae hefyd yn cefnogi Diabetes UK er cof am ei gefnder Ray Gravell ac mae’n cyfrannu at Glwb Bowlio Tref Cydweli bob blwyddyn.
Mae’n Llywydd Côr Meibion Llanelli a Chôr Meibion Dyffryn Tywi ac mae’n darparu faniau i fynd a bwyd a hanfodion i wledydd tlawd yn gyson.
Mae Mr Gravell yn un o brif noddwyr Clwb Rygbi’r Scarlets a Chlwb Rygbi Cydweli ers dros 30 mlynedd ac mae’n noddi digwyddiadau di-ri (gan gynnwys cystadlaethau rygbi), gan ddarparu gwobrau mawr ar gyfer arwerthiannau a rafflau. Roedd yn allweddol yn sefydlu Cymdeithas Twristiaeth a Masnach Cydweli drwy drefnu digwyddiadau codi arian amrywiol.
Sefydlwyd Cwmni Gwerthu Ceir Gravell gan Tom sef diweddar dad Mr Gravell. Erbyn heddiw mae’r busnes wedi trosglwyddo i ddwylo ei feibion, Ian a Jonathan ac mae Mr Gravell yn parhau yn Gadeirydd. Rhoddir Medal yr Ymerodraeth Brydeinig am wasanaeth clodwiw sy’n deilwng o gydnabyddiaeth gan y Goron. Mae gwasanaeth cofrestru sifil Cyngor Sir Gaerfyrddin yn trefnu seremonïau gwobrwyo ynghyd â’i ddyletswyddau eraill sy’n cynnwys genedigaethau, marwolaethau a phriodasau.
