On Friday June 1st, bereavement support charity 2 Wish Upon A Star will be holding its 6th annual charity cycle, 2 Wish on 2 Wheels. The two-day bike ride has had an exciting makeover!
This year the charity has changed the route from Somerset to South Wales to raise awareness in the areas that the charity now works, supporting suddenly bereaved families.
“It was important to remember why we were doing this event. Like every charity we need donations to operate, but we also need families to know we are there to help. This new route incorporates the Welsh towns where the hospitals we work with are situated. Starting in Haverfordwest we’re hoping to raise awareness in the surrounding areas of Withybush Hospital, Glangwilli Hospital in Carmarthen and Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli. We already work closely with these hospitals, but we are aware that there are many people in the area who have lost a child and who may need our support.” Rhian Burke.
The charity was founded in 2012 by Rhian following the sudden and tragic loss of her one-year old son, George. Rhian and her husband Paul found that there was little to no support available and, unable to cope with the loss, Paul took his own life five days later. Rhian grew up in Pembrokeshire and attended Sir Thomas Picton School in Haverfordwest, she has a personal passion to help families in that area.
Rhian set up 2 Wish Upon A Star in the hope that no other family in Wales would ever feel the same loss and lack of support that she had.Six years on and the charity now works with every police force and health board in Wales providing immediate support to families that lose a child or young adult, suddenly and traumatically.
