So here we are! ā€œFrame and Fortuneā€. Where to begin?

Well, letā€™s start at the beginning. Who am I, what am I doing here, why am I going to write a column? Ok, hereā€™s the introduction. My name is Jo, Iā€™m a picture framer, with my workshop near the village of Llangynog (Carmarthen). I love the work I do, love working with the people I meet and helping them find the perfect way of displaying the pictures / prints / photos / textiles / objects / canvasses / Picassoā€™s (ok, not really had one of those yet) that are important to them. My world is a visual and aesthetic one and I enjoy helping people protect and display the things that they treasure and want to enjoy.

My job as a framer also brings me into contact with many local artists and I consider myself very lucky to be able to work with them, getting to know them, and being able to help them present their work. Framing is an extension of their artwork and should help us (the viewer) to focus on the work being displayed, but in a subtle way, never ā€œupstagingā€ a piece. As local artist (and one of my customers) Fi Latus says ā€œthe framing process is part of a collaboration between the artist and framerā€.

We are lucky to have a wealth of artistic talent in the West Wales area, and in this column I hope to be able to bring you plenty of info, inspiration and insider information about what is going on in the local fine art scene, which artists to watch, and where to enjoy their work. Once you get into this it can be quite addictive.

I also plan to give you framing and display hints, tips and let you into some trade secrets to help you avoid falling into any traps if you are paying for someone to frame work for you. You could imagine that framing a picture is as simple as just sticking it in a frame (maybe adding a mount), but Iā€™m afraid itā€™s not. I look forward over the coming months to being able to share some useful information with you to help you to become an informed consumer.
