Carmarthenshire County Council Leader Emlyn Dole present the Beacon Bursary to Amanda Thomas,

2018 Beacon Bursary winner named

THE winner of this year’s Beacon Bursary award is a passionate dog owner whose business proposal is to provide nutrient-rich dog treats.

Biscuit’s Barkery, set up by Amanda Thomas, will receive a cash prize of £5,000, free office space within the Beacon Centre for Enterprise in Dafen, Llanelli, and business mentoring support to help develop her business.

The Beacon Bursary is an annual competition run by Carmarthenshire County Council in partnership with Coleg Sir Gâr and University of Wales Trinity Saint David.

The award provides new businesses and entrepreneurs an opportunity to access finance, office space and a wealth of advice and support which will provide the best opportunity for their new businesses to flourish.

Amanda, 32, from Carmarthen, is currently a student at Coleg Sir Gâr.

She is studying towards her Level 3 Beauty Therapy student at the Graig campus where she has also just completed the business module of Welsh Bacc qualification to provide her with the knowledge needed to develop ‘Biscuit Barkery’.

“I set up Biscuits Barkery after having my own French bulldog named Biscuit. My business is really led by my passion for dogs,” said Amanda, a qualified degree-level nutritionist.

“Winning this award means everything, especially having the support from business mentors as I have so many ideas but don’t know how to exercise them.

“The business is very much in its start-up phase so winning this award means I can get the business up and running and get my brand out there.”

Amanda was one of 10 new entrepreneurs to reach this year’s final and get the chance to pitch their proposals to a panel of judges including Carmarthenshire County Council Leader Emlyn Dole, last year’s Beacon Bursary winner Lian Poulson who has her own fashion label Lian Cara, and Chris Jenkins from Gerald Thomas Accountants.

Second place and receiving ÂŁ2,000 and six months free office space at the Beacon, went to Sewing Circus, set up by Hanna Symis. Sewing Circus is a Unisex Childrenswear manufacturer and retailer, selling STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) influenced clothes online to challenge negative stereotypes in kids clothing. Hanna is a University of Wales Trinity Saint David student studying for her BA in Business Management.

Third place and receiving ÂŁ1,000 and six months free office space at the Beacon, went to Adam, Eve and Green, by Elizabeth Diamond, Sue Diamond and Lisa Ariffin. Their aim is to be an environmentally friendly and eco-conscious gardening brand who will offset each order made with planting a native tree here in Wales to reduce Carbon footprint.

Mother Sue is a Coleg Sir Gâr student and is about to graduate with a BA in Fine Art Sculpture from the Jobs Well campus where Elizabeth also did her foundation course before going to Falmouth University, graduating in 2016.

Council Leader Cllr Emlyn Dole, who is responsible for Economic Development, said: “Once again this year we have seen some great ideas and all 10 candidates will be offered support by our business officers with their business ideas as we thought they all had potential. I would like to congratulate the three winners and wish them all the best with their future plans and I look forward to following their progress.”

Helen Evans, enterprise champion at Coleg Sir Gâr said: “We’re thrilled and proud that two of our students have been successful in the bursary competition. They, along with all 10 finalists, have worked hard at juggling their business plans and academic studies at the same and are worthy winners.

“They both have fantastic ideas which will be further supported by the enterprise department at Coleg Sir Gâr, as well as Carmarthenshire County Council who have provided the prize awards and will be supporting them with business expertise at the Beacon to develop and grow their companies.”

Enwi enillydd Bwrsariaeth y Goleudy 2018

MAE enillydd Bwrsariaeth y Goleudy eleni yn dwlu ar gĹľn a’i syniad busnes yw cynnig danteithion llawn maeth i gĹľn.

Bydd Biscuit’s Barkery, a sefydlwyd gan Amanda Thomas, yn cael gwobr ariannol o ÂŁ5,000, swyddfa am ddim yng nghanolfan fenter y Goleudy yn Nafen, Llanelli a chymorth mentora busnes i’w helpu i ddatblygu ei busnes.

Cystadleuaeth flynyddol a drefnir gan Gyngor Sir Caerfyrddin ar y cyd â Choleg Sir Gâr a Phrifysgol Cymru y Drindod Dewi Sant yw Bwrsariaeth y Goleudy.

Mae’r wobr yn cynnig cyfle i fusnesau ac entrepreneuriaid gael mynediad i gyllid, swyddfeydd a llond gwlad o gyngor a chymorth er mwyn rhoi’r cyfle gorau i’w busnesau newydd ffynnu.

Mae Amanda, 32, yn dod o Gaerfyrddin ac mae hi’n fyfyrwraig yng Ngholeg Sir Gâr ar hyn o bryd.

Mae hi’n astudio Therapi Harddwch lefel 3 yng nghampws y Graig lle mae hi hefyd newydd gwblhau modiwl busnes Bagloriaeth Cymru er mwyn rhoi’r wybodaeth sydd ei hangen arni i ddatblygu Biscuit’s Barkery.

“Sefydlais Biscuit’s Barkery ar Ă´l cael ci tarw Ffrengig o’r enw Biscuit. Rwy’n dwlu ar gĹľn a dyna sy’n arwain fy musnes,” meddai Amanda, sydd â chymhwyster lefel gradd mewn maetheg.

“Mae ennill y wobr hon yn bopeth imi, yn enwedig y cymorth a gaf wrth y mentoriaid busnes oherwydd mae gen i gymaint o syniadau ond nid wyf yn gwybod sut i’w rhoi ar waith.

“Dim ond dechrau arni ydw i gyda’r busnes felly mae ennill y wobr hon yn golygu y gallaf i roi’r busnes ar ei draed a rhoi fy mrand i mas yno.”

Roedd Amanda yn un o ddeg entrepreneur newydd a gyrhaeddodd y rownd derfynol eleni ac a gafodd gyfle i roi eu cynigion gerbron panel o feirniaid a oedd yn cynnwys Arweinydd Cyngor Sir Caerfyrddin – y Cynghorydd Emlyn Dole, enillydd Bwrsariaeth y Goleudy y llynedd – Lian Poulson sydd â’i label ffasiwn ei hun, Lian Cara, a Chris Jenkins o gwmni Cyfrifwyr Gerald Thomas.

Yn yr ail safle yr oedd Sewing Circus a sefydlwyd gan Hanna Symis, a fydd yn derbyn ÂŁ2,000 a chwe mis o swyddfeydd am ddim yn y Goleudy.  Gwneuthurwr ac adwerthwr dillad plant ar gyfer y ddau ryw yw Sewing Circus sy’n gwerthu dillad ar-lein a ddylanwadir gan y pynciau STEM (Gwyddoniaeth, Technoleg, Peirianneg a Mathemateg) i herio’r steroteipiau negyddol a geir yn nillad plant. Myfyrwraig ym Mhrifysgol Cymru y Drindod Dewi Sant yw Hanna ac mae’n astudio ar gyfer BA mewn Rheoli Busnes.

Yn y trydydd safle yr oedd Adam, Eve and Green, gan Elizabeth Diamond, Sue Diamond a Lisa Ariffin, a fydd yn derbyn ÂŁ1,000 a chwe mis o swyddfeydd am ddim yn y Goleudy. Eu nod yw bod yn frand garddio sy’n gydnaws â’r amgylchedd ac yn eco-ymwybodol, gan wrthbwyso pob archeb a wneir drwy blannu coeden frodorol yma yng Nghymru, a thrwy hynny leihau’r Ă´l troed carbon.

Mae Sue yn fyfyrwraig yng Ngholeg Sir Gâr ac ar fin graddio â BA mewn Celfyddyd Gain o gampws Ffynnon Job, lle gwnaeth Elizabeth ei merch hefyd ei chwrs sylfaen cyn mynd ymlaen i Brifysgol Falmouth a graddio yn 2016.

Dywedodd y Cynghorydd Emlyn Dole, Arweinydd y Cyngor a’r Aelod o’r Bwrdd Gweithredol sy’n gyfrifol am Ddatblygu Economaidd: “Unwaith eto eleni rydym wedi gweld syniadau gwych a bydd y deg ymgeisydd oll yn cael cynnig cymorth gyda’u syniadau gan ein swyddogion busnes oherwydd roeddem o’r farn eu bod nhw i gyd yn addawol. Hoffwn longyfarch y tri enillydd a dymuno pob hwyl iddynt gyda’u cynlluniau yn y dyfodol, ac edrychaf ymlaen at ddilyn eu hynt.”

Dywedodd Helen Evans, hyrwyddwr menter yng Ngholeg Sir Gâr: “Rydym wrth ein boddau fod dau o’n myfyrwyr wedi bod yn llwyddiannus yng nghystadleuaeth y fwrsariaeth. Maen nhw, fel y rheiny i gyd a gyrhaeddodd y rownd derfynol, wedi gweithio’n galed i gyfuno’u cynlluniau busnes gyda’u hastudiaethau academaidd ac maen nhw’n enillwyr teilwng.

“Mae gan y ddwy syniadau gwych a fydd yn cael cymorth pellach gan adran fenter Coleg Sir Gâr yn ogystal â chan Gyngor Sir Caerfyrddin, sydd wedi darparu’r gwobrau ac a fydd yn cynnig arbenigedd busnes iddynt yn y Goleudy er mwyn helpu eu cwmnĂŻau i ddatblygu a thyfu.”
