Patients with complex and specialist care needs could be treated in new build hospital, says Hywel Dda consultant

Hywel Dda’s doctors of the future could see and treat patients with complex and specialist care needs that the health board has historically had to outsource, a leading Consultant has said.

With one week to go before Hywel Dda’s Big NHS Change consultation comes to a close on Thursday 12 July, Mr Jeremy Williams, a senior emergency medicine consultant at Glangwili General Hospital, said certain key services – such as coronary angiography and cardiac pacing, which the health board is only currently able to provide on a limited basis – could be delivered on a much bigger scale at a new hospital somewhere between Narberth and St Clears.

Mr Williams also said it was “crucial” that the facility was built in the right place to ensure that doctors undergoing training saw enough complex cases to keep their skill levels up – as well as giving them a chance to develop their own areas of expertise.

He added: “For all of us it’s really important that the location of any new hospital is at a place where there will be enough activity for some really key specialities – for example in obstetrics and paediatrics – so that in the future the deanery, the regulators, the colleges, doctors, nurses and health board are able to confidently say that those specialities are robust and sustainable.”

The health board is consulting on three proposals to fundamentally change the way it provides health and care for current and future generations – all of which would see a new hospital built somewhere in between Narberth and St Clears.

Hywel Dda’s Medical Director, Dr Phil Kloer, added: “Throughout the course of the consultation there has been a lot of discussion amongst our population about why we need to have a new hospital in the location that the health board has identified.

“One of the key reasons is that there are some specialties where you need to have a certain amount of throughput for that specialty to be sustainable – and that is important for the doctors, nurses and therapists either in training or in their daily work to see enough complex cases to keep them upskilled.

“We also know that having more specialists in one place is attractive for junior and trainee doctors as well as other clinical staff and we want them all to be involved in creating that new service model, because not many people in their careers have this kind of opportunity.

Meddai Ymgynghorydd arweiniol y gallai meddygon y dyfodol yn Hywel Dda weld a thrin cleifion ag anghenion gofal cymhleth ac arbenigol, sef gwasanaethau y mae’r bwrdd iechyd yn hanesyddol wedi gorfod eu hanfon yn allanol.

Gyda dim ond wythnos i fynd tan ddyddiad cau ymgynghoriad Hywel Dda, Trawsnewid ein Gwasanaeth Iechyd, ar Dydd Iau 12 Gorffennaf, meddai Mr Jeremy Williams, Meddyg Ymgynghorol ym maes Meddygaeth Frys yn Ysbyty Cyffredinol Glangwili, y gallai rhai gwasanaethau allweddol megis angiograffeg coronaidd a rheoli’r galon -gwasanaethau y mae’r bwrdd iechyd ar hyn o bryd ond yn medru eu darparu ar raddfa fechan – gael eu darparu ar raddfa llawer fwy mewn ysbyty newydd rhywle rhwng Arberth a San Clêr.

Meddai Mr Williams hefyd ei bod hi’n hanfodol bod y cyfleuster newydd yn cael ei adeiladu yn y lleoliad cywir er mwyn sicrhau bod meddygon dan hyfforddiant yn gweld digon o achosion cymhleth i gynnal eu lefelau sgiliau – yn ogystal â rhoi’r cyfle iddynt i ddatblygu eu meysydd arbenigedd eu hunain.

Aethant ymlaen i ddweud: “Mae’n bwysig iawn i bob un ohonom bod unrhyw ysbyty newydd mewn lleoliad y bydd yn gweld digon o actifedd mewn rhai arbenigeddau allweddol – er enghraifft mewn obstetreg a paediatreg – fel bod y ddeoniaeth, y rheoleiddwyr, y colegau, meddygon, nyrsys a’r bwrdd iechyd yn y dyfodol yn medru bod yn hyderus yn dweud bod yr arbenigeddau hynny yn gadarn ac yn gynaliadwy.”

Mae’r bwrdd iechyd yn ymgynghori ar dri chynnig i newid yn sylweddol y ffordd y mae’n darparu iechyd a gofal ar gyfer y genhedlaeth hon a chenedlaethau’r dyfodol – mae pob un o’r cynigion yn cynnwys adeiladu ysbyty newydd rhywle rhwng Arberth a San Clêr.

Ychwanegodd Dr Phil Kloer, Cyfarwyddwr Meddygol Hywel Dda: “Drwy gydol yr ymgynghoriad mae llawer o drafodaethau wedi’u cael ymhlith ein poblogaeth ynghylch pam mae angen i ni gael ysbyty newydd yn y lleoliad y mae’r bwrdd iechyd wedi’i nodi.

“Un o’r prif resymau yw bod yna rai arbenigeddau lle y mae’n rhaid trin nifer penodol o achosion er mwyn i’r arbenigedd honno fod yn gynaliadwy – ac mae’n bwysig i’r meddygon, y nyrsys a’r therapyddion sydd naill ai dan hyfforddiant neu wrth eu gwaith beunyddiol, i weld digon o achosion cymhleth i gynnal eu sgiliau.

“Gwyddom hefyd bod cael mwy o arbenigwyr mewn un man yn ddeniadol i feddygon iau a meddygon dan hyfforddiant yn ogystal â staff clinigol eraill, ac rydym am iddynt oll fod yn rhan o’r dasg o creu model gwasanaeth newydd – nid oes nifer fawr o bobl yn cael y math hwn o gyfle yn eu gyrfaoedd.
